The Elsetree Project is a fantastic non-profit organisation celebrating the history of Elsetree Studios in London. As well as playing host to some of the world’s greatest film sets, such as The Avengers and Labyrinth, Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece The Shining was also filmed there.

In their own words:

The Elsetree Project is an on-going oral history project, created in partnership between Howard Berry of the University of Hertfordshire and Bob Redman and Paul Welsh MBE of volunteer group Elstree Screen Heritage. Since September 2010, veterans of major film and TV productions have been interviewed about their careers and life in the film industry. We have recorded interviews, hosted and organised screenings of films made at Elstree in three ‘Elstree Film Seasons’ and we have made our own films from the content in our interviews.

The website has some incredible archived material on a huge amount of films, but most excitingly, has a section dedicated solely to the man himself. The Stanley Kubrick page has four videos created from interviews and clips from people talking about Stanley Kubrick including from Sir Ken Adam, Alf Newvell and Christiane, his wife.

Even more excitingly is the original point behind this piece and that is that The Elsetree Project are hosting a rather unique and glorious event: Forever and Ever: 25 Years of Kubrick’s The Shining

This event, in essence, is a screening of The Shining to celebrate it’s 35 year anniversary – any opportunity to watch a Kubrick film in a cinema and I’m sold instantly. However, much like Kubrick’s films themselves, there is more to this than meets the eye.

Guests expected to attend this wonderful event include:

Jan Harlan – Stanley’s brother in law, close personal friend and Executive Producer of The Shining

Christiane Kubrick – Artist and Wife of Stanley Kubrick

Katharina Kubrick – Stanley’s daughter and Location Assistant / Art Department Researcher on The Shining

As well as the following members of The Shining film crew:

Ray Andrew: Steadicam Operator

Lia Beldam: “Young Woman in 237”

Garrett Brown: Steadicam Operator / Inventor

Lisa and Louise Burns: “The Grady Girls”

Brian Cook: Assistant Director

Richard Daniel: Sound Recordist

Diane Johnson: Screenplay Co-writer

Mick Mason: Camera Technician

Ray Merrin: Sound Post-Production

Doug Milsome: Focus Puller / Camera Assistant / 2nd Unit

Kelvin Pike: Camera Operator

Kate Robinson: Camera Assistant

Ron Punter: Scenic Artist

Ivan Sharrock: Sound Recordist

Gordon Stainforth: Assistant Editor

Les Tomkins: Art Director

Adam Unger: Second Assistant Editor

WOAH! If that wasn’t enough, the even will be hosted at The Odyssey Cinema in the town Stanley lived in during the latter part of his life – St Albans, just outside of London. If you’re not quite convinced yet, here are some pictures of inside the cinema:
