The family tree is fairly small as any history relating to the parents and grandparents of both Stanley and Christiane are almost impossible to find, but it’s a start for those who are curious about the relationships, marriages and children in the Kubrick-Harlan family tree.
Kubrick was married twice before he met Christiane to Toba Metz, his high school sweetheart and Ruth Sobotka an Austrian dancer and theatrical designer. He met Christiane while filming Paths of Glory and they were married in 1958. She had a daughter, Katharina, from a previous marriage and she and Kubrick had two daughters together; Vivian and Anya. Anya sadly died from cancer in 2009 and Vivian is currently living in Los Angeles. Katharina has a son called Joe, however any further details about him remain hard to find. She and Joe once did a Reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’ which you can read here. This was the only evidence I could find that Joe even existed. Another name on the tree that might sound familiar is Jan Harlan, Christiane’s brother. He worked as a producer on several of Kubrick’s films, most famously The Shining and has since published books on the director.
